Not Helping Indeed

Sadly, it turns out that the You’re Not Helping blog, now deceased, was predicated upon a pack of lies.  There is no defending it.  It is especially sad because there is surely a place for what was promised and a number of interesting — indeed helpful — things were said there.  Those positive signals will now be lost, perfectly understandably, amidst the noise of controversy and deceit.  The story is available here; the crowing by its opposition is going on here, here and here.

One important takeaway from this debacle is offered by Zachary Voch in the comments here:

The moral of the story is a common one: don’t listen to people on the basis of agreement; reason should apply to all positions and claims.

Moreover, all of us who agreed with YNH at various points will now be even more suspect by those who disagree with us.  That surely doesn’t help at all.

  1. I agreed with YNH at various points. But I don’t espouse because of it that we need to be more suspicious of critics. That’s a very strange logic.

I also disagreed with YNH on various points. We should be open to arguments and be suspicious of rhetorical fallacies, misrepresentations, exaggerations, out-of-context quotes and so fourth.

You paint the critics of YNH unfairly by calling it crowing. Lots of his “opposition” actually wanted him to continue, just to stop lying, misrepresenting and exaggerating.

I surely hope you will do better than YNH and be factual in your criticism and fair in the way you handle comments.

The idea is that we need to be especially careful when others agree with us. Confirmation bias is exceedingly strong.

There was a lot of crowing. I never meant to suggest that everyone was crowing.

      Res ipsa loquitur.

  2. I don’t understand. Let me justapose:
“various points will now be even more suspect by those who disagree with us” vs your later “The idea is that we need to be especially careful when others agree with us”

So being suspect of those we disagree with is now suspicion of those we agree with. Which one is it?

“Res ipsa loquitur.” – In dubio pro reo.

  3. […] (6/30/10, 9:10am PT):  As I have noted elsewhere, YNH has been shown to be based upon a pack of lies and, as a consequence, Ms. Benson has been […]
